The Jetavanaramaya Stupa, built by King Mahasena in the 3rd century CE, was once the tallest stupa in the world. At its peak, it stood at approximately 122 meters (400 feet), showcasing the advanced engineering skills of ancient Sri Lanka. Jetavanaramaya was a significant monastic center, housing thousands of monks and scholars. Even today, it remains a site of pilgrimage and a symbol of Sri Lanka’s rich Buddhist heritage.
