Our History
The Mirihana Sri Vivekarama Temple was established on November 21, 1941, by the Most Venerable Kitagama Pannasara, a revered Buddhist master. His journey as a monk began on October 31, 1936, at the Wilpita Forest Monastery. After receiving his higher ordination on June 10, 1939, he dedicated himself to religious activities and community service.
The Current Leadership
The Most Venerable Kitagama Hemasara currently leads the temple and holds various esteemed positions within the Buddhist community, serving as a guiding light for countless devotees. He serves as Principal of Hiriyala Siri Ariyawansa International Tripitaka Institute and Chief Secretary of Amarapura Sri Dharmarakshita Maha Nikaya, demonstrating exceptional leadership in preserving Buddhist teachings.
Our Mission
Since its inception in 1941, the temple has been a center for religious awakening and community development. The founder promoted education and spiritual guidance for the villagers while establishing a vibrant religious community.
Educational Contributions
Vivekarama Temple has been pivotal in establishing educational institutions such as Sri Rohana Dhamma School and Mirihana Vivekarama Night English School, significantly impacting the education of local children.
The Sacred Bo Tree
In 1950, a sacred Bo tree was brought to Vivekarama from Nagarukkarama Temple. A shrine was constructed around it in 1952, symbolizing the temple's deep-rooted spiritual significance.
Legacy of Development
The temple complex has evolved under dedicated leadership into a comprehensive spiritual center. The founder's commitment to training monk disciples ensured the continuity of Buddhist traditions until his passing in 2011.
